A mortgage is a loan in which the borrower (usually a home buyer) pledges the property as security for the payment of the loan. Because the property is the security for the loan, if the borrower fails to repay the mortgage as agreed–or otherwise defaults on the loan–the lender may take possession of the property via foreclosure.
